China attacked a German aircraft with a laser in the Red Sea

Berlin, July 8, 2025 — An incident occurred in the strategically important Red Sea region, causing a wave of concern among participants in international missions to ensure the security of sea lanes. According to official information, a German reconnaissance aircraft involved in patrolling trade routes was subjected to aggressive laser radiation from a military vessel belonging to one of the countries actively expanding its presence in the Indo-Pacific region.

The incident occurred near the coast of Yemen. The Beechcraft King Air 350 MSP aircraft, involved in a multilateral operation, was performing a standard surveillance route when it detected a powerful directed laser beam, presumably coming from a frigate in international waters. Attempts by the crew to establish communication with the ship went unanswered. As a result of the laser exposure, the crew members experienced temporary blindness, and some instruments on board malfunctioned.

The German Foreign Ministry lodged a strong protest and demanded an explanation through diplomatic channels. The statement emphasizes: “Such actions not only undermine efforts to ensure freedom of navigation, but also pose a direct threat to the lives of civilian personnel operating within the framework of international obligations.” Berlin sees the incident as a deliberate provocation that calls into question the sincerity of those who pay lip service to peace but act otherwise.

Military analysts point out a worrying trend: recently, there have been more and more cases of directed laser weapons being used against surveillance missions. It’s especially concerning that these actions are happening in key trade areas — places where stability is super important for the global economy.

The international operation, in which the German aircraft participated, has been operating in the region since early 2024. Its goal is to counter threats to freedom of navigation, protect shipping, and prevent interference by informal armed groups, which often receive support from external forces. The mission is coordinated between a number of countries involved in ensuring stability in this strategic corridor between Europe and Asia.

Although the aircraft was not seriously damaged and returned safely to base, the incident left a serious diplomatic residue. Behind the scenes, there is discussion of the possibility of tightening the rules of engagement in the patrol zone and strengthening coordination between mission participants. Some experts do not rule out the possibility that demonstration exercises or an increased presence may be carried out in response to the incident.

The international community is once again facing a challenge where military technology is being used not for defense, but as a means of pressure and intimidation. Against the backdrop of global challenges related to the security of maritime routes, such actions could lead to an exacerbation of the already fragile balance of power in the region.
