Ukraine Calls Emergency UN Security Council Meeting After Overnight Russian Strikes on Kyiv

Kyiv, August 1, 2025 — Ukraine has called for an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council following a large-scale Russian attack on Kyiv during the night of August 1. The announcement was made by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha in an official statement early Wednesday morning.

According to Ukrainian authorities, the overnight assault involved missiles and Iranian-designed “Geran” kamikaze drones, targeting key locations across the capital. The strikes caused significant destruction to civilian infrastructure and led to casualties, although the full extent of the damage and loss of life is still being assessed.

Minister Sybiha emphasized that the attack was aimed directly at critical areas of the city and represented a deliberate act of aggression against civilians. He stated that such actions require an immediate and coordinated international response.

The emergency Security Council meeting is scheduled for later today. Ukraine intends to present evidence of the strikes and push for concrete international measures, including increased sanctions against Russia, enhanced air defense support, and mechanisms to hold Russian officials accountable for repeated violations of international humanitarian law.

The attack comes amid heightened concerns over Russia’s continued targeting of urban centers far from the front lines. Kyiv residents were forced into shelters throughout the night as explosions echoed across the city.

Western leaders have already condemned the latest escalation. Statements from Washington, London, and Brussels have expressed strong support for Ukraine’s position and called for urgent action within the UN framework.

Despite the pressure, Ukraine remains resolute in defending its sovereignty. “We will not be intimidated,” Sybiha said. “Ukraine continues to fight not only for its freedom, but for the security of all who believe in international law and human rights.”
