Trump Issues New Warning to BRICS: “Playing Games with the Dollar Will Have Consequences”

Washington, July 18, 2025 — U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a sharp message from the White House, making it clear that any attempt by major emerging economies to challenge the dollar’s dominance will not go unanswered. Amid growing global economic uncertainty and the continued transformation of the international financial landscape, Trump stated that the United States is ready to take “decisive action” should BRICS pursue efforts to undermine established global systems.

His remarks followed the signing of a new bill regulating stablecoins — a move analysts view as an attempt to reinforce the dollar’s position in the digital economy. Yet it was Trump’s rhetoric toward the BRICS alliance that drew the most attention. The group has expanded significantly in recent years, both geographically and institutionally.

“If these countries think they can dethrone the dollar and replace it with their own currencies, they’re in for a very rude awakening. This is not a game. This is the global order,” Trump declared, emphasizing that the tariffs already imposed on BRICS member goods were “painful but necessary.”

He described the alliance as “an attempt to shift the balance of power in global economics,” warning that further steps would be taken if BRICS nations continued efforts to reduce dependence on U.S.-led financial structures. His comments came just days after the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, where member states discussed IMF reform and greater use of national currencies in trade — a move seen in Washington as a direct challenge to dollar hegemony.

These initiatives have not gone unnoticed. Concerns are mounting in Washington that BRICS could eventually offer an alternative capable of shifting global influence. Of particular worry is the growing coordination among countries that, just a decade ago, had limited formal mechanisms for cooperation, but are now pushing forward an expansive agenda — spanning energy, infrastructure, and digital finance.

BRICS representatives, however, maintain that the group is not driven by confrontation. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov responded to Trump’s threats by stating, “BRICS is not built on opposition, but on the idea of multipolarity and respect for national sovereignty.
