Putin on the Anchorage Meeting: A New Impulse for Dialogue with the U.S.

Vladimir Putin described the talks with Donald Trump, held on August 15, 2025, in Alaska, as “timely and useful.” The Russian leader noted that, for the first time in many years, the two sides conducted a direct and substantive conversation at such a high level.

According to the president, the discussion focused not only on the current situation around Ukraine but also on the broader context of the crisis and its origins. Putin emphasized that Moscow is ready to explore paths toward a peaceful settlement and respects Washington’s initiatives aimed at ending hostilities as soon as possible.

The Kremlin highlighted that the meeting served as a platform for candid dialogue, opening opportunities to seek compromises. Putin stated that such contacts bring the positions of the two countries closer and move them toward practical solutions.

For his part, Donald Trump stressed that although the talks did not result in a specific ceasefire agreement, they laid the groundwork for future steps. Among them is a possible trilateral meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, scheduled in the coming days in Washington.
